Warplane Information Fact Sheets The UNITED STATES In the late 30's early 40's the United States chose to follow the British system by naming their planes, and chose to follow and American standard of a letter-number type system. The ARMY and the NAVY have their own system which are shown below. The Army uses a Letter first which indicates the function of the craft, followed by a number which indicates the sequence of appearance of that model. The ARMY does not designate the manufacture.
The NAVY system starts with a letter(s) which designates the function, followed by a number or numbers which indicates the number of that such plane that the manufacture has produced. the second group of letters indicate the manufacturer, and the numbers following (if any) designate the veriations of the original model
